Christmas-greeting from Neptuno

Dear friends and colleagues,     

We wish you all Merry Christmas and a happy new year! Hopefully the year 2017 will be as good as 2016.

This year we made a few donations to some social projects and nonprofit foundations. We are actively supporting those four projects.

„Hogar de Paz“ –  Project for school kids of low income families in marginal areas of Bogota 

„Amigos del Abuelo“ – Retirement home for homeless people 

„Fundacion Bosconia“ – Education for homeless children 

„Laudes Infantes“ – Project of social integration in some marginal parts of Bogota 

Our object for 2017 is to ensure that the relationship with the projects is even more intensive. In 2016 the first tourists that we have in common visited some of the projects and we automatically started to arrange internships in the projects for foreign volunteers. Thanks a lot for your support!

Last but not least our opening hours during Christmas-time: Our office will remain closed the 24th and 25th of December & the 31st of December and 1st of January 2017.

Liebe Freunde und Kollegen,    
       
wir wünschen Euch frohe Weihnachten und einen guten Rutsch ins neue Jahr!

Anstatt Weihnachtsgeschenke zu verteilen haben wir uns in diesem Jahr dazu entschlossen die folgenden sozialen Stiftungen in Bogota wohltätig zu unterstuetzen.

Ausserdem haben wir schon ein paar Termine ausgemacht mit den einzelnen Stiftungen, um zu sehen wie wir die Unterstützung unsererseits noch intensivieren können. Mit grosser Freude sehen wir, dass wir schon den ein oder anderen Praktikanten an die Projekte vermitteln konnten und bereits einige unserer gemeinsamen Touristen während ihres Kolumbienaufenthalts die Projekte besuchten. Airline News KLM

Ab dem 28. März 2017 wird die Fluggesellschaft KLM mit einem Dreiecksflug dreimal wöchentlich (Dienstags, Donnerstags, Samstags) von Amsterdam nach Bogotá und Cartagena fliegen und von Cartagena zurück nach Amsterdam. Der Flug wird mit dem Boeing Dreamliner durchgeführt, Cartagena ersetzt ab diesem Datum Cali, welches im Moment noch Teil der Verbindung zwischen Bogotá und Amsterdam ist.

From the 28th of March 2017 on, KLM will offer a regular flight to Bogotá and Cartagena as a triangular flight with the Boeing Dreamliner three times a week (Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday). The flight starts in Amsterdam, lands in Bogotá and Cartagena and than returns to Amsterdam.

Cartagena will replace Cali, which is currently part of the triangular flight between Bogotá and Amsterdam.

Tipping in Colombia

Today we want to give you some useful guidelines for tipping in Colombia. Due to our experience and estimations, the following amounts might serve as an orientation  for individuals, couples or families (for groups the amounts are usually higher) when tipping in Colombia:

1. For guides we suggest an amount of approx. 10 USD (total amount, not per person) per day in case you are happy with the service. (1 Full Day)
2. For drivers we suggest an amount of approx. 5 USD (total amount, not per person) per day in case you are happy with the service. (1 Full Day)
3. In the better restaurants on most bills, you will see a 10% voluntary tip (¨propina voluntaria¨).  You are not required to pay it, but it is common to pay it.
4. For Taxis there is no tip expected
5. Regarding tips for luggage porters: A small tip is common. Unlike in other countries, tipping for the porter is per event, not per bag. So, if you have one or two bags, the tip would be the same. We recommend approx. 1 USD

If you have any further questions regarding tipping in Colombia, please don't hesitate to ask us. 

By the way: There are new notes in Colombia. We especially like the 5.000 Peso bill, which shows the typical Paramo landscape. 

Trinkgelder in Kolumbien

Weil immer wieder kleine Fragen zum Thema der üblichen Trinkgelder in Kolumbien auftauchen, möchten wir Euch hier ein paar Infos dazu schicken. Unserer Erfahrung und Einschätzung nach sind die folgenden Beträge gute Richtwerte für Alleinreisende, Paare oder Familien (für Gruppen sollte ein höheres Trinkgeld pro Tag eingeplant werden): 

1. Für Reiseleiter empfehlen wir bei Zufriedenheit ein Trinkgeld von ca. 10 USD (Gesamt, nicht pro Person) für einen kompletten Tag
2. Bei Fahrern empfehlen wir bei Zufriedenheit ein Trinkgeld von ca. 5 USD (Gesamt, nicht pro Person) für einen kompletten Tag
3. Trinkgelder in Restaurants: In den meisten höherwertigeren Restaurants ist ein Trinkgeld von 10% bereits in der Rechnung enthalten
4. In Taxis wird grundsätzlich kein Trinkgeld erwartet
5. Für Kofferträger in Hotels ist ein Trinkgeld von ca. 1 USD üblich

Usaquen - the neighborhood next to Neptuno´s office

In this short input we would like to let you know where Promotora Neptuno is located and what’s going on there. Of course there are also possibilities for our clients to visit this nice colonial neighborhood. 

So, what’s up in Usaquén?

Usaquén is one of the most traditional quarter of Bogotá and is located in the north-east of the city. In the 16^th century it was actually a suburb of Bogotá, but with the fast increase it got one of the various quarters of Bogotá. But the former suburb could keep their exclusivity and the small and picturesque alleys lent itselves to a calm and nice walks and offers a totally different atmosphere, than the lively main Shoppingroads, further south in Bogotá. A bunch of restaurants, bars and shops are seated here and let you feel to walk through a southeuropean city, also concerning the prices. Usaquén is also the business district of Bogotá and unites the building in colonial with the modern skyscrapers.

The main sights of the historical center of Bogotá are the church ‘Iglesia Santa Barbara´, which was built in 1665, furthermore the shopping center ‘Centro Comercial Hacienda Santa Barbara’, which counts to one of the most exalted of the city and is already prepared in the end of October with hundreds of chains of lights for Christmas. Finally there is the ‘Plaza de Usaquen´, which represent the center of the market ‘Mercado de las Pulgas de Usaquén’, which takes places every sunday and also on Mondays, if it is a holiday. Here you can buy typical colombian food like different kind of arepas, Empandas, Obladas, a big variety of bags, yewellery, leatherproducts, herbs and alternatives cures, everything mostly handcrafted.

Our clients can get an insight in this quarter by joining the Fullday Citytrip of Bogotá, which starts in the south, at the ‘Plaza Bolivar’ and ends with the ‘Centro Comercial Hacienda Santa Barbara’ in Usaquén, in the north of the city. A fantastic possibility for our visitiors, to see the great variety of Bogotá.

Usaquen - das Viertel in der Nähe des Büros von Neptuno

Mit diesem kleinen Beitrag möchten wir euch das Viertel  näher vorstellen, das in direkter Nähe zu unserem Büro von Neptuno gelegen ist. Die Frage lautet also:

Was ist eigentlich geboten in unserem Viertel...USAQUÉN?

Usaquén ist eines der traditionellsten Viertel von Bogotá und liegt im Nordosten der Stadt. In seinen Anfängen im 16. Jahrhundert war es ein Vorort von Bogotá, aber durch den schnellen Wachstum der Stadt, wurde Usaquén eines der unzähligen Vierteln der Stadt. Das ehemalige Dorf hat sich seine Exklusivität behalten können und seine kleinen und malerischen Gässchen im Kern von Usaquén laden zu einem gemütlichem Spaziergang ein und bieten ein gänzlich anderes Ambiente als die quirligen Haupteinkaufsstrassen, mehr im Süden Bogotás. Dutzende Restaurants, Bars und Geschäfte haben sich hier angereiht und versprühen den Charme einer südeuropäischen Stadt, auch was die Preise betrifft. Usaquén stellt auch gleichzeitig das Geschäftsviertel Bogotás dar und vereint die ursprünglichen Häuser im Kolonialstil mit den neuen modernen Hochhausbauten.

Die Hauptsehenswürdigkeiten des historischen Kerns Usaquéns ist einmal die Kirche‚ Iglesia Santa Barbara‘, die 1665 erbaut wurde, ausserdem das Einkaufszentrum‚ Centro Comercial Hacienda Santa Barbará‘, dass zu einem der nobelsten der Stadt zählt und bereits Ende Oktober in ein Lichterkettenkleid gehüllt, unmissverständlich die Weihnachtszeit proklamiert. Und zu guter letzt der ‚Plaza de Usaquén‘ der jeden Sonntag und auch an darauffolgenden Feiertagen, den Ausgangspunkt des‚ Mercado de las Pulgas de Usaquén‘ darstellt. Hier findet man neben vielen kolumbianischen Köstlichkeiten wie Arepas, Empanadas, Obladas eine grosse Auswahl an Taschen, Schmuck, Lederwaren, Dekoartikeln, Kräuter- und Heilmittelchen, alles grösstenteils handgefertigt.

Einen Einblick in das Viertel Usaquén, erhalten unsere Kunden bei einer Stadtbesichtigung von Bogotá, im Rahmen eines Ganztagesstädtetrip, die im Süden Bogotás am Plaza Bolivar beginnt und mit dem ‚Centro Comercial Hacienda Santa Barbara´ in Usaquén und damit im Norden der Stadt endet. Ein toller Tagestrip, der den Besuchern, die ganze Vielfalt der Stadt eröffnet.

Vorübergehende Schliessung des Tayrona Nationalparks

Der Tayrona Nationalpark an der kolumbianischen Karibikküste wird von 28. Januar 2017 bis zum 28. Februar 2017 seine Pforten für jegliche Form von Tourismus schliessen. Hierbei werden sämtliche im Park vorhandenen Hotels geschlossen. Ausserdem sind keine Tagesausflüge innerhalb des Parks möglich. Grund fuer die Schliessung ist nach Angaben der Parkbetreiber die ökologische Regenerierung des Nationalparks, die von den in der Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta wohnenden indigenen Bevoelkerungsteilen beantragt wurde. Sollten Gäste von uns betroffen sein werden wir uns selbstverständlich sofort bei euch melden, um rechtzeitig andere individuell an eure Kunden angepasste Alternativen zu suchen und zu finden.

Alternativ für einen Ganztagesausflug in den Nationalpark Tayrona bieten wir euch einen Tagesausflug nach Taironaka und den Strand von “Los Angeles” an. Hier eine Beschreibung, die aber natürlich individuell an die Bedürfnisse unserer Kunden angepasst werden kann:

Tagesausflug Taironaka & Playa Los Angeles

Taironaka ist ein Paradies, das sich am Ufer des Flusses «Don Diego» in den Ausläufern der Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta befindet. Diese ehemalige indigene Siedlung verfügt immer noch über Wege und Terrassen der Tayrona Zivilisation und wird heutzutage von ihren Nachfahren, die Kogi Indianer, frequentiert.  Das Naturreservat beeindruckt den Besucher mit seiner wunderschönen Flora und bietet die Möglichkeit im Fluss zu baden. Nach einer landschaftlich schönen Fahrt entlang der Küstenstraße erreichen Sie den Fluss «Don Diego» nach ca. 90 Minuten. Von hier aus fahren Sie 5 Minuten flussaufwärts mit dem Motorboot. Als Willkommensmenü bekommen Sie  leckere Patacones (fritierte Kochbananen) und eine traditionelle Agua de Panela (Zuckerrohrsaft). Sie besuchen das kleine Tayrona-Museum und lernen die Geschichte und Kultur dieser interessanten Zivilisation kennen. Anschließend besuchen Sie ein  Bohio und wandern durch alte Terrassenkonstruktionen, dabei lernen Sie die Bauweise und Gewohnheiten der Kogui-Indianer näher kennen. Im Anschluss besuchen wir auf dem Rückweg die den Traumstrand “Playa los Angeles”, der sich an der östlichen Grenze des Nationalparks befindet, mit Zeit zum Baden oder fuer einen Strandspaziergang.

Temporary Closing of the Tayrona National Park

The Tayrona National Park at the Caribbean Coast will be closed from 28th of January 2017 til 28th of February 2017. All hotels that are located in the park are closed. Furthermore the operation of day tours into the park is completely suspended. According to the operator of the Tayrona National Park the reason for the temporary closing is a petition of the indigenous people that live in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in order to guarantee the ecological recuperation of the ecosystem. If anybody of our clients is affected by the closing we will contact you immediately.

As a good alternative to the Full Day trip to the Tayrona National Park we propose the following tour. Of course the activity can be adjusted individually to needs of our clients.

Full Day Tour Taironala & “Playa Los Angeles”

Taironaka is an authentic natural paradise located in the “Don Diego” riverbanks and the foothills of Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. This extinct indigenous settlement still counts with paths and terraces of the Tayrona civilization and nowadays is visited by their descendants, the Kogis. This reserve delights visitors with its exhuberant flora, fascinating landscapes and crystal clear rivers. From Santa Marta we will go through the interesting coastal road until we reach the Don Diego’s riverbanks (90 Mins). From there the journey will be continued on a boat going upstream ‘til we get to the reserve. As a welcome we are received with some typical “patacones and “agua de panela”. Later we visit the small Tayrona Museum to get to know a little more about their history and the way of living of this culture from the past to these recent days. We will visit a typical Kogui home called Bohío and then we continue going around the prehispanic terraces until we get to a small viewpoint (around 1,5 hours). The rest of the time is free. We suggest either a relaxing bath in Don Diego River. Afterwards we visit the amazong beaches of Playa Los Angeles that are located next to the Tayrona National Park.

Friedensvertrag zwischen Regierung und Rebellen vom Kongress bestätigt

Nach mehr als fünf Jahrzehnten des Bürgerkriegs haben am Mittwoch Abend die kolumbianische Regierung und die FARC-Guerilla den historischen Friedensvertrag endgültig besiegelt. Nach dem Senat billigte auch der kolumbianische Kongress das Abkommen.

Ende September diesen Jahres wurde eine erste Version des Friedensvertrages im Beisein vieler Staats- und Regierungschefs feierlich in Cartagena unterzeichnet. Anfang Oktober wurde das Abkommen unter den ausgehandelten Bedingungen aber in einem Referendum vom Volk mit knapper Mehrheit abgelehnt. Das jetzt unterzeichnete Abkommen wurde in insgesamt ca. 50 Punkten überarbeitet und vom Kongress ratifiziert.

Die Gegner  des ursprünglich vorgelegten Abkommends um den früheren Präsidenten Kolumbiens Álvaro Uribe (2002 - 2010) kritisierten vor allem zu milde Strafen für Kriegsverbrecher. Der Vertrag wurde überarbeitet und Strafregelungen verschärft. Ausserdem soll das Vermögen der Rebellen, die sich über Aktivitäten des Drogenhandels finanzieren, zur Entschädigung der Opfer genutzt werden. Das Volk wurde nicht nochmals an die Wahlurnen gebeten und Uribes Partei “Centro Democrático” boykottierte das Votum im Kongress.

Der aktuelle Präsident Santos hat nun angekündigt die Bedingungen des Friedensabkommens so schnell wie möglich zu implementieren, die Entwaffnung (unter UN-Überwachung) voranzutreiben und die Überführung von ca. 6000 FARC-Kämpfern in das zivile Leben zu ebnen.

Colombia's congress ratifies peace accord with rebels

After more than five decades of conflict, more than four years of negotiations in Cuba and two signing ceremonies, Colombia's congress formally ratified a peace agreement allowing left wing rebels of the FARC (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia) to enter politics.

Colombia´s president Juan Manuel Santos and rebel leader Rodrigo Londoño signed the revised accord last week in a ceremony in Bogota. The new agreement, that ends Latin America's longest insurgency, was put together in just over a month after the original pact - which allowed the rebels to hold public office and skip jail - was unexpectedly defeated in a referéndum on 2nd of October. The opposition with its leader and former president of Colombia (2002 - 2010) Alvaro Uribe argued that the deal offered too many concessions to the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, and did not serve as a deterrent for other groups involved in crime.

Santos, who won the Nobel Peace Prize 2016 for his peace efforts, wants to get the deal implemented as quickly as possible to maintain the ceasefire deal with the FARC. The peace deal will formally end the continents´s longest-running conflict that has killed more than 220,000 and displaced millions of people.
