In September
a group of colleagues went on a trip to explore some destinations along the
Magdalena River.
The tour
started in Bogota and ended in Cartagena, with stops in Honda, Barrancabermeja,
Mompox, San Jacinto and San Basilio de Palenque.
On our first stop in Honda we explored the beautiful
colonial city, did a tour to the Lost City of Falan and improved our fishing
skills on an artisanal fishing tour. From Honda we headed to Barrancabermeja,
wherefrom you can do highly interesting tours like birdwatching at the
surrounding Cienagas (affluents) or learn about the cacao production in El
Carmen de Chucurri. To our next destination, Mompox, we arrived by lancha and
two ferries, that took us down River Magdalena. We explored the city and
enjoyed the colonial arquitecture, participated in a workshop about filigree
art and visited the Cienagas (affluents) of Mompox. At the Cienaga you can take
a bath in the refreshing water, watch birds and other wildlife, or simply experience
authentic local life. On our way to Cartagena we stopped at the villages San Jacinto and San Basilio
de Palenque. In San Jacinto we found amazing local artwork and in San Basilio
de Palenque, which is a world heritage site, we did a tour through the village
and learnt about the culture and life of the African community.
We really enjoyed the trip along the river and can highly recommend it for clients with some travel experience, who are looking for a combination of highly authentic, cultural experiences, a hint of adventure and comfortable accommodations.
