Colombia has a new president

June 17th was the day that the Colombians voted again to determine a new president. With 53.98% Iván Duque beat his opponent Gustavo Petro (41.81%). The overall voter participation was 46.96%, which is even higher than it was during the first round, and again it was a tranquil election Sunday, without any riots.
With Iván Duque, the majority of the Colombians voted for the rightist candidate, who wants to act strictly against corruption and to strengthen the Colombian economy. Shortly after his election the freshly voted president, who will assume his office in August, talked about the peace process: he wants to bypass the gap between advocates and opponents. Furthermore, although he seeks changes, he doesn´t want to tear apart the current peace agreement. What these changes will look like in detail and if/how the FARC will accept them, will become apparent in the next couple of months.
