Silk produced and processed in Colombia - does that sound weird? Well...it's true!
Many years ago, the Colombian government subsidized and trained local farmers to switch to the silk business. Unfortunately, silk prices could barely compete with other countries, so manyfarmers eventually abandoned the silk business. However, a couple of these farmers (or farmers' wives!) are still operating and diligently producing the beautiful, soft silk!
On our new half-day tour near Popayan, your clients will learn the complete process of silk - from worm to thread - ona farm, entirely run by women!
In the following the brief description of the tour, for more info please contact your local travel agent as usual:
Nowadays, the village of Timbío is one of the few places where the silk industry, which was introduced about 40 years ago through an initiative of the state, has been preserved. The entire production - from planting the mulberry leaves for the silk worms, to the production of the silk threads - is entirely in women's hands here.
Transfer from Popayan to Timbío, where on a tour through the fields of mulberry leaves, the nursery and pupation stations of the silk worms to the processing of raw silk, the welcoming and empowered women demonstrate and explain everything about their daily work. After a snack and a visit to the silk handicraft store, we return to Popayan.
