PROVIDENCIA - UNIQUE EXPERIENCES ON AN CARIBBEAN ISLAND

We were on the road again for you and your clients! 

We visited the Caribbean island of Providencia for a few days. A true paradise, hardly any tourists and surrounded by the largest coral reef in the country and at the same time the third largest coral reef in the world. Therefore, the island is the ideal place not only for nature lovers and sun bathers, but also for divers.  Providencia is located off the coast of Colombia and impresses with its untouched nature and picturesque beaches. The island is only 17 km2 in size and just 7 kilometers long and 5 kilometers wide, and the average temperature is between 25 and 31°C all year round. In 2020, the island was hit by a hurricane and has been under reconstruction ever since. Although the effects of this natural disaster are still partially visible, and the once lush green vegetation has not yet fully recovered, Providencia nowadays charms again with its flora and fauna and the tourist infrastructure is largely restored. We are confident that it will only take a few more years for nature to fully recover and for the island to completely regain its magnificent green glory.

Our journey began with a flight from Bogotá to San Andres, whose airport is served daily by several airlines (direct flights from Bogotá and Cartagena). From San Andres, there are now two ways to get to Providencia: the first option is a short flight (about 35 min, three times a day) with a small propeller plane and the second option is a trip of about 3.5 hours with a catamaran (every Monday, Wednesday and Friday). We chose the first option and as soon as we landed we were greeted by Providencia's stunning scenery. Deep blue waters and a relaxed atmosphere awaited us.

During our visit, we inspected several hotels to find the best options for your clients. Our favorites are the Hotels Miss Elma and Posada del Mar. Both hotels are located right on Agua Dulce/Freshwater Bay beach, are simple 3 star boutique hotels like most hotels on the island and have their own restaurant and air conditioning. Hotel Miss Elma has 6 rooms and Posada del Mar has 24 rooms. However, with these two hotels, it should be noted that the beach area is very narrow and not sandy beach, but pebble beach.

The island attracts a variety of fascinating tourist and sports activities. You can explore the picturesque island on your own on foot, by bike or on a motorcycle, enjoying relaxing hours on the idyllic beaches. In addition, you can visit the neighboring island of Santa Catalina, which attracts with a breathtaking viewpoint. It is very easy to get to the small neighboring island via a bridge.

Every Saturday there is also a horse race on the beach of Suroeste, which every visitor can witness. A must-do for every visitor to Providencia, however, is to explore the island and the surrounding reefs by boat and to go snorkeling or diving. The visit of the small island Cayo Cangrejo with a great viewpoint is especially recommended.

LGBTQ+ TOURISMUS HERZLICH WILLKOMMEN IN KOLUMBIEN

Auch wenn das Land vermutlich als eher konservativ und katholisch geprägt wahrgenommen wird, liegt Kolumbien tatsächlich auf Platz 23 des Gay Travel Index (GTI) und gehört somit zu den LGBTQ+-freundlichsten Ländern der Welt! Im Hinblick auf Gesetze zur Stärkung ihrer Rechte war Kolumbien sogar einige Jahre früher dran als z.B. Deutschland: Bereits 2007 wurde ein Gesetz zur Einführung einer eingetragenen Partnerschaft verabschiedet und 2016 wurde endgültig die gleichgeschlechtliche Ehe legalisiert. Auch die Adoption nicht leiblicher Kinder ist seit November 2015 problemlos möglich.

Nicht nur auf dem Papier ist Kolumbien offen gegenüber der LGBTQ+-Community, sondern vor allem in fortschrittlichen und aufgeschlossenen Großstädten wie Bogotá, Medellín, Cali, Cartagena und Barranquilla sind sie herzlich willkommen. Wie in den meisten Teilen der Welt, sind die Bewohner der Großstädte aufgeschlossener, da sie bereits mehr Kontakt zu Mitgliedern der LGBTQ+-Community hatten, als Menschen in ländlicheren Gegenden Kolumbiens. 

Die kolumbianischen Metropolen haben für alle Besucher so einiges zu bieten: Der größte Schwulenclub Lateinamerikas befindet sich mitten in Chapinero, Bogotá. Theatron bietet Platz für 5000 Gäste, auf 17 verschiedenen Floors findet jede(r) die perfekte Musik zum Feiern, es gibt auch eine speziell für Frauen reservierte Tanzfläche und Gogo Tänzer. Wer gerne tanzen geht, sollte diesen Club unbedingt für ein Wochenende in Bogotá einplanen! Gleich in der Nähe gibt es einige Unterkünfte speziell für LGBTQ+-Kunden, aber auch viele andere Hotels setzen sich sehr für Inklusion, Vielfalt und Gleichberechtigung ein. Das Hilton Hotel z.B. organisiert sehr viele gleichgeschlechtliche Hochzeiten.

In Medellín sind LGBTQ+-Reisende ebenfalls bestens aufgehoben: In El Poblado finden ihr eine Vielzahl an Bars, Clubs und Restaurants oder auch Stadtführungen, die auf das Thema der LGBTQ+-Geschichte eingehen, z.B. die Graffiti-Tour durch die Comuna 13 mit einem lokalen Führer, der besondere Aufmerksamkeit auf die Werke der LGBTQ+-Künstler legt.

Auch die Karibikstadt Cartagena hat einiges für diese Zielgruppe zu bieten: mehr als 20 traumhafte Sandstrände, aufregendes Nachtleben im Zentrum und gay-freundliche Boutique Hotels. Als extravagante Exkursion empfehlen wir das Island Hopping auf einem privaten Boot entlang der Rosario Inseln, perfekt zum Schnorcheln, Angeln und Entspannen. 

Nur gute zwei Stunden entfernt liegt Barranquilla. Hier sollten Eure Kunden den traditionellen Karneval auf keinen Fall verpassen. Er blickt auf 100 Jahre Tradition zurück und ist einer der 5 größten der Welt. Guacherna Gay – ein nächtlicher Karnevalsumzug der LGBTIQ+-Szene mit allem Glitzer und Glamour, den man sich vorstellen kann: Graziöse Dragqueens, herausgeputzte Tänzer und ein ganzer Trupp gelb-rot gekleideter Marimondas (Kostüm als Form des Protests, um die Elite des 19. Jahrhunderts zu verspotten, die die Arbeiterklasse ausbeutete) – eine einzigartige Erfahrung.

Kurzum: Reisende der LGBTQ+-Community werden unvergessliche Erfahrungen hier in Kolumbien erleben, vor allem beim Erkunden der urbanen Angebote. Die Mehrheit der kolumbianischen Einwohner ist offen und neugierig, und vor allem stolz, Besuchern aus dem Ausland die Vielfalt des eigenen Landes näherzubringen.

A WARM WELCOME TO LGBTQ+ TRAVELLERS IN COLOMBIA

Even though this country might probably be seen as a rather conservative and catholic one, Colombia is actually rated #23 of the Gay Travel Index (GTI) and therefore is amongst the most LGBTQ+-friendly countries in the world! Regarding its laws to reinforce LGBTQ+ rights, Colombia was even some years head of contries like e.g. Germany: Already in 2007, a law was passed to introduce a registered partnership and in 2016, same-sex marriage was legalised. Also adoption of non biological children is possible since 2015.

Colombia is not only open to the LGBTQ+ community on paper, but especially in progressive and open-minded big cities like Bogotá, Medellín, Cali, Cartagena and Barranquilla they are very welcome. As in most parts of the world, residents of big cities are more open-minded, as they have already had more contact with members of the LGBTQ+ community than people in more rural areas of Colombia. 

The metropoles have a lot to offer for everybody: The largest gay club in Latin America is located in the middle of Chapinero, Bogotá. In "Theatron", that accommodates up to 5000 guests and comes with 17 different floors, everyone can find their preferred party music and there is a dance floor especially reserved for women and gogo dancers. If you like going out and dancing, you should definitely plan a visit to this club for a weekend in Bogotá! Close by there are a couple of hotels for gay customers only, but also many other hotels are very committed to inclusion, diversity and equality. E.g. The Hilton hotel organizes plenty of same-sex weddings.

Medellín is another great spot for LGBTQ* travelers: In El Poblado, you can find a variety of bars, clubs and restaurants, or even city tours that focus on the theme of LGBTQ+ history, such as the graffiti tour of Comuna 13 with a local guide who draws special attention to the works of LGBTQ+ artists.

The Caribbean city of Cartagena also has a lot to offer for this target group: more than 20 gorgeous sandy beaches, exciting nightlife in the center and LGBTQ+-friendly boutique hotels. For an extravagant excursion, we recommend island hopping on a private boat along the Rosario Islands, perfect for snorkeling, fishing and relaxing.

Barranquilla is just about two hours away from Cartagena and here you should not miss the traditional carnival. It looks back on 100 years of tradition and is one of the 5 largest in the world. Guacherna Gay - a nightly carnival parade of the LGBTIQ+ scene with all the glitter and glamour you can imagine: Graceful drag queens, dressed-up dancers and a whole troop of yellow and red dressed marimondas (costume as a form of protest to mock the 19th century elite that exploited the working class) - a unique experience.

In a nutshell: travelers from the LGBTQ+ community will have a great experience here in Colombia, especially exploring the offers in the major cities. The majority of the Colombian inhabitants are open and curious, and above all proud to show foreign visitors the diversity of their own country.

Beautiful Coffee Farm, close to Armenia

The coffee farm El Balso is a small rural lodging with traditional architecture typical of the region. It comes with 7 comfortable rooms.
