This explanation seems to hit the nail on the head,
since in recent years the negative effects on the environment caused by
humanity have become more and more obvious and have been the subject of
frequent public discussion. So if we believe in the thesis of the indigenous
people, the current situation is the simple manifestation of a disease,
transmitted from the earth to man, and of course it does not spare Colombia.
The effects: Apart from the fact that national and international tourism is
currently completely on hold, there is a general curfew in the country, hence
the streets are almost deserted and social and working life is almost at a
complete standstill.
Those who benefit most from the retreat of us
humans into our homes and the reduced industry are flora and fauna. All over
the world, people are reporting reduced air pollution, improved water quality
and an increase in the appearance of various animals - on land and at sea - in
areas where these species have often not been seen for a long time. Pumas, for
example, walk through the streets of big cities, a variety of marine life romps
around in harbours all around the world, and the trees in cities are full of
birds chirping.
The following positive effects observed in Colombia
so far:
1. Increased appearance and return of many wildlife
species
Areas and streets deserted by humans, are claimed
by wild animals. In Bucaramanga, for example, foxes scurry through the streets,
in Casanare anteaters and in Neiva small opossums. Also on the coast, there is
more maritime life close to the shore, which is most probably due to the
severely restricted water traffic.
2. Increased appearance and return of many native
bird species
The greatly reduced noise levels in the cities
(65-75% during the day, 95% at night) together with a greatly reduced volume of
traffic seem to be the reason why more and more birds are once again feeling at
home in the urban jungle and are romping in the treetops.
3. Improved air quality in large cities
The current suspension of national and
international air traffic, as well as the extremely low volume of traffic on
the roads and the severely restricted industrial sector, are causing a
significant decrease of particulate levels in cities such as Bogotá, Medellín
and Bucaramanga. Considering that this is a goal that has been pursued by the
government for years, but has not been achieved yet, this seems to be one of
the most decisive positive effects that can currently be recorded, for both the
inhabitants and the local flora and fauna!
We are probably all wondering if these positive
effects on the environment (worldwide and here in the country) will continue,
and the honest answer is probably: Unfortunately no.
Although the whole of mankind (and the environment)
seems to have adapted to the current situation in no time at all - we change a
couple of habits, seemingly have no problem keeping busy at home, etc. - as
soon as productions start running again, normal everyday life resumes and thus
air, road and boat traffic increase again, we will probably return to our usual
"normality" in no time.
Our hope is that we all realize that our habits can
obviously be changed quite easily and quickly, and we should, after this
complicated phase, try to adjust those habits that have negative impacts on the
environment, accordingly.
A little suggestion on our part, as a potential
occupational therapy at home:
Think about the habits (personal and general) that
have a negative impact on our environment and find a solution to minimize or
even avoid them.
Neptuno also takes this issue very much to heart
and we are working all the more to update and expand our portfolio of
sustainable products in the near future, in order to offer your clients an
authentic and sustainable tourism here in Colombia!
