Nevado de Ruiz – an active giant

For the area around the volcano Nevado de Ruiz still exists alarm level "Orange II - eruption within days or weeks probably," because of volcanic activities. This is why the National Park Los Nevados National remains closed until further notice. The authorities fear especially mudslides, which are expected from a possible outbreak due to snow melting. The 5,400 m volcano (the highest peak in the Central Cordillera of Colombia) caused world-wide attention in 1985, when after an eruption a mudslide buried the town of Armero, located 47 km from Nevado de Ruiz.
