At this moment, two for the tourism in Colombia
very important national parks are closed.
The Colombian
island Gorgona in the Pacific Ocean is indefinitely closed. The island is situated
about 35 km off the Pacific coast. The
park actual just opens for investigators, scuba divers and visitors who stay
for just one day. There is no possibility to stay overnight. Restaurants and accommodations
are closed. The reason is the lack of security in the park as well as the
outstanding licensing for the touristic commercialisation.
Some background information about the national
park: Gorgona functioned as a prison from 1959 until 1984 when it was turned
into a National Natural Park in the year 1985 in order to preserve its rich
wildlife of the sub-tropical forest and the coral reefs offshore. The island
has got a large number of endemic species and is famous for its unique
ecosystems.
Furthermore, the National Park “Sierra de
Macarena” is affected by a closing. There is located the (for many people) one
of the most beautiful rivers in the world, the “Caño Cristales”. The low water level
of the river provoked the closing of the park. The good news is that one heavy
rainfall could change the situation very fast.
If one of your clients is affected by the
closing of one of the parks we will contact you. We keep you informed about the
status.
