Cattleya Trianae. One of Colombia's most beautiful flowers


There are a lot of reasons to fall in love with Colombia. One of them is it manifold nature. Colombia exhibits between 45.000 and 55.000 differnt kinds of flowers. Furthermore the colombian nature contains 3.500 different types of orchids. That´s around 15 % of different types of orchids worldwide. The Cattleya Trianae or so called mayflower belongs to the big family of Colombians orchids. Since 1936 Cattleya Trianae is the national flower of Colombia. The flower grows in the temperate zone between 1,000 and 2,000 meters above the seaside with 17 to 24 degrees. The flower is named after the famous colombian natural scientist José Jeronimo Triana.

In 1936 the academy of History in Argentina invited the colombian government to participate at a exhibition to introduce a flower which represent the land and the people of Colombia. Afterwards the colombian natural scientist Emilio Robledo were supposed to find the flower of the nation and finally he discovered one: Cattleya Trianae. The inner perianth of that maryflower contains the colors of the ensign of Colombia: Yellow, blue and red.

Armenia, the capital of the Department Quindío, arranges every year the International Exhibition of the orchids. During that exposition more than 3,000 different kinds of orchids are shown. The plenty of orchids makes Colombia to one of the most special and wonderful places on earth
