Presidential Elections in Colombia

Last Sunday, May 27th, 19.628.254 Colombians voted a new president, to take over from the current president Juan Manual Santos. With 53%, voter participation was higher than in previous elections, which underlines the importance of these presidential elections.
The entire process was completely peaceful, without any riots. 2 hours after the polling locations closed, it was clear, that there will be a run-off vote. None of the candidates achieved the absolute majority, so the elections will be decided June 17th between Iván Duque and Gustavo Petro. Duque from the rightist party Democratic Centre (Centro Democratico) achieved 39.1%, left-oriented Gustavo (Colombia Humana) 25.1% of the votes. The centre-left candidate Sergio Fajardo ended up third rank with 23.8%, and therefore doesn´t proceed to the second round.
Obviously, one of the main topics is the peace process with FARC. Both, Duque and Petro want to advance with it, however Duque calls for some changes in the current agreement, as, in his opinion, the FARC gets away too lightly.

The result of these elections stays highly interesting not only for Colombia but also for the rest of the world.

We will keep you posted on the upcoming events.
