In a ceremony in Mesetas, a mountainous area in
south-eastern Colombia, Colombia´s president Santos and Farc’s top leader
Rodrigo Londoño came together to formally mark the end of FARC´s existence as
an armed group, putting an end to half a century of violent conflict.
Building the 26 camps, where the rebels are now assembled,
tooka little bit longer than expected. For this reason the date of the
complete disarmament was delayed about 4 weeks.
The United Nations monitored
the mission in Colombia, registered and stored 7.132 weapons, as well as
munitions, which are being held in shipping containers in each of 26 special
transition zones for Farc members. The Farc are now preparing to enter civilian
life and will now work on forming a political party.
The handover of the weapons was a key demand in the peace
process that was signed in 2016, which marked the end of the Farc's 52-year
conflict.
